Welcome to the Unofficial ILWU Local 19 Website

This website was created to educate the ILWU membership as well as others, on how the union operates and also to make oneself a better educated person. Knowledge is the key to power.

The site also showcases the history of ILWU Local 19 and ILWU Auxiliary 3, which were established in 1937 and 1934 respectively.

These pages were created by a now retired ILWU member Curt Cunningham, who back in 1999, built this site as a way to help ILWU members obtain all the information possible, as stated in ILWU Union Principle #1. Over the years, thousands of hours were spent to make this site what it is today.

Unfortunately "ilwu19.com" is not connected or affiliated with the ILWU or Local 19 in any form of official capacity and I cannot answer questions related to these entities. The ILWU has a long and proud tradition of rank-and-file activism, and this website is an extension of that history.

What is a Longshoreman ?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines a Longshoreman as; "(Long-shore-man) n. a dock worker who loads and unloads ships."

Entreaty

Keep us O God, from pettiness. Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking. May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face without self pity and prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment and always be generous.

Teach us to put into action our better impulses straightforward and unafraid. Let us take time for all things that make us grow calm, serene and gentle. Grant that we may realize it is the little things of life that create differences: that in the big things in life we are as one, and may we strive to touch the great common heart of us all.

And, Oh Lord, God, Let us not Forget to be Kind.
