Joe Toro's "Believe it or Not"

How it All Began and How it All Ended

Believe it or not, for 15 years or better I had written this special little column in The ILWU Local 19 newsletter called The Hook.... Most of the readers have enjoyed and had fun with the contents. As a matter of fact, it was the support and interest of the readers that made me continue this for as long as I did.

This all started back in the late 1960’s. I felt a little humor would be an asset during such time when things were not so humorous, such as the 1969 pool and their low work opportunity, the strike in 1971 and the many difficult times that had surfaced afterward.

I felt if I could give the guys something to laugh and joke about, that I would be instrumental in giving something unique to our Union.

In my 21 years as a member of Local #19, I am very happy and very thankful for what I have received and that is an opportunity to earn a good living, medical and dental coverage and many other benefits that gave myself and my family a pretty good lifestyle especially when it's so evident to see so many people without (just look around!).

Also, I have been with a unique group of men and women and the bottom line is weather they liked you or not, if you had your back to the wall, they were by your side to assist you no matter what!!!

My involvement in Christmas parties, ballgames, The Hook, Docktalk, politics, etc., was just a small way that I could give for so much that I received...I just want to thank everyone for giving me the opportunity.

On the 21st of April, 1990 I was accepted into ILWU Local #98. Needless to say, it was an advancement that I wanted... Because of this advancement, I retired from writing my column Believe It Or Not.

So for now, “Believe It Or Not”, for the last time, “I Gotta Go,”

Thanks!!
