Phillip Leroy NEVILLE Was born on April 26, 1943 in Butte, Montana to parents Catherine Fern Brady and Bert O'Dell Neville. A year later they moved to Seattle. Phil graduated from Chief Seattle high school in 1961 and began his career on the waterfront as a longshoreman in 1962.

He eventually married his sweetheart Janis Riewald before enrolling in the army in 1964. Phil served overseas for two years as a Transportation Specialist, then served as a standby until he was Honorably Discharged in 1970. He continued his education, earning first an AA degree at Highline Community College, graduating as a Phi Theta Kappa in 1974. He transferred and graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 1976.

His career on the waterfront advanced as he became the youngest Business Agent in waterfront history, working for local 19 from 1972 through 1975. Even as he worked nights for the Union, he earned a degree as a Certified Public Accountant in 1980. Phillip served as Chief Supervisor for Seattle Stevedore Association at Terminal 18 until he retired in 1996. He was highly respected in all ports around the world. Phillip was a leader known for his sense of pride in a job done correctly and his sense of fair to all who worked for him.

His life was devoted to the waterfront and his family. His quick sense of humor and strong role as leader will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Phillip died June 8, 2003 after a long illness in the arms of his family. He is survived by mother Catherine Neville, sister Marlene Flanary, brothers Daniel Neville, Marvin Griffin, Gerald Griffin, Lonnie Neville, William Neville, stepbrother Patrick Secrist and several nieces and nephews. His father O'Dell Neville and older brother James Griffin both died last year.
