For
over 20 years, local longshoremen and their families have given time and
resources to ensure that those less fortunate in our community are able to enjoy
the simple pleasures of the Holiday Season that most of us take for granted. In
1986, the Charitable Services Foundation was formed to expand on these outreach
endeavors. With
the help of local businesses, community organizations and individual volunteers,
families in need are identified and selected by the Foundation’s Review
Committee. These families receive enough food to help them through the entire
holiday season, while children receive personalized, wrapped gifts complete with
a card signed by Santa. The
Foundation solicits support through food drives, raffles, toy drives, and
monetary contributions, as well as the charitable donations of local businesses,
community organizations and individuals. Also, every member of Local 19
contributes a cash donation each year. The Charitable Services Foundation is a Non-Profit Organization with no paid employees. Using a volunteer staff enables us to transfer more of the donations directly to the Outreach. All
contributions are tax deductible. Article from the January 2004 Dispatcher ILWU Christmas for Kids™ |
