The Seattle World Class Port Coalition, representing ILWU Locals, The Port of Seattle, waterfront employers and the Pacific Maritime Association, commit to build a strong relationship, promote trust and work together as a team to enhance the quality of our work environment, increase production, and attract additional cargo to foster the economic vitality of the region. We will create a standard of cargo handling in the port that will set Seattle apart as a world class model for the maritime industry.

Working Together Produces Results
From the World Class Port Coalition Newsletter, Sept. 1998

Thanks to the rank and file of the ILWU and the terminal operators, productivity in the harbor continues to show strong gains.

Container moves per hour have risen 19 percent since the first quarter of 1997. The cost per ton of cargo consistently is the lowest on the West Coast. Many factors contribute to this success, and certainly one major factor is the new spirit of cooperation among labor, terminal management, shipping lines and the Port of Seattle.

The coalition was created for everyone with a stake in Seattle's success to talk about issues such as equipment, manning, and rail and road transportation that are critical to improving productivity and improving the work environment.

Even in the short time since the coalition was launched, we can see tangible results that support and expand jobs in our harbor, reduce costs and improve operations at the terminals.

Everyone involved in the effort knows a lot of work lies ahead. Some of the coalition committees have experienced differing levels of effectiveness and report mixed results. Coalition members recognize that creating new, more positive relationships, changing practices and equipment, is a long-term effort.

All of us working in the Seattle harbor can be proud of this effort. It's attracting notice from other ports and the trade press as well.
