According
to Seattle Times reporter, Stephen H. Dunphy:
"Container volumes at the Port of Seattle for April were up 19
percent compared with April 2002, driven mostly by Asian traffic. The shift in
value of the dollar may change the equation later this year, but for now imports
rule.
So far this year, the
total is up by 16 percent more containers to 441,186 versus the first four
months of 2002. Part of the increase is due to a new lease with Northland
Services, which operate barges between Seattle and Alaska. Part of it is due to
a general increase in inbound goods from Asia to be refilled with goods bound
for the U.S., according to the Port."
