UW, Teaching Assistants Reach Agreement at Last Minute

The union representing University of Washington teaching assistants, graders and
tutors reached agreement with the administration early
Monday, avoiding a threatened strike that had promised to disrupt exams and
throw the grading of students’ work into question.
The fledgling union, representing 1,600 graduate students, had sought
recognition from the administration, and from there wanted to proceed to
collective bargaining. Details of the agreement between the Graduate Student
Employee Action Coalition/United Auto Workers and the administration, reached
around 1 a.m., were not being disclosed. But a union representative described
the pact as a positive step.
