Convention ILWU Pacific Coast Pensioners’ Association

Monday, Sept.11: Convened
at 9:00 AM at Cathedral Hill Hotel. We were welcomed Joe Mosley, Host President,
Local 10. We stood for the National Anthem. An Invocation was given by Dr. Amos
Brown, Board of Supervisors City & County of San Francisco. We observed one
minute of silence for deceased brothers and sisters.

President spoke thanking everyone for their attendance.
We were welcomed by Incoming International President Jim Spinosa, Vice
President, Bob McEllrath and the new Coast-Committeemen: Ray Ortiz, Jr. and Joe
Wenzl; who said that they would try to get the welfare/medical issue taken care
of as soon as possible.
Tony Salcido, Al Perisho and Paul Everdell spoke about their experiences on the
trip to Cuba. Tony and Al further spoke of their second trip to deliver ancient
auto parts to help repair the Cuban Longshore Union’s disabled car–their
only transportation. They were successful in getting them “back on their
wheels”.
We adjourned at 11:30 to buses to take us to the harbor tour. We experienced an
exceedingly fine tour of the San Francisco/Oakland harbor. Cleophas Williams
proved to be an excellent tour guide and historian.
The banquet held that
evening at 7:00 PM was also excellent with fine food and entertainment.
Tuesday, Sept. 12:
Convened at 9:00 AM Cathedral Hill Hotel. Brian McWilliams, Past International
President spoke to us thanking us for past support.
The first order of
business was the nomination of officers. John Ehly requested that he be
withdrawn from nomination for vice-president because of his health. Officers
nominated and elected were: President, Joe Lucas, Local 10; 1st Vice-President,
Lou Loveridge, Local 13 (by acclamation, because he was absent); 2nd Vice
President, John Johnson, Local 19; Secretary-Treasurer, Arne Auvinen, Local 8;
(Patricia Mulder was hired as a stenographer to assist this office); Welfare
Committee, Arne Auvinen, Bill Ward alternate; Education Committee, Art Alameda,
Local 13; Puget Sound Delegates, Phil Lelli, Local 23 and Paul McCabe, Local 19,
alternate, Robert Mackner.
All resolutions presented
from the Executive Board were passed.
It was moved, seconded and
passed that the per capita assessment of $4.00 per year be raised $1.00 to a
total of $5.00 effective January, 2001.
Adjourned at 5:30 PM to a
tasty Barbecue at the Local 10 Longshore Hall.
Wednesday, Sept. 13: Convened at 9:00 Cathedral Hill Hotel. The newly elected
officers were installed. Retiring vice-president John Ehly was honored with a
plaque and Emma Ehly was also honored for her unfailing support these many
years.
George Romero, Nick Buckles and the other area Welfare Directors spoke to us.
David Arien, past International President, spoke of the danger that the young
active members would become complacent about the need for substantial pension
benefits as they take part in the employer touted 401K plans.
This ended the 33rd
Convention and we adjourned to meet in Seattle, Sept. 2001 for the 34th Annual
PCPA Convention.
There was an excellent turnout from all the ports including Canada. Local 19
made a great showing with 25 members, including Nick Buckles, attending: Mr.
& Mrs. Russ Alexander, Mr. &. Mrs. Ted Hansen, Mr. & Mrs. Lee
Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Terry 0’Neil, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Hicks, Mr. & Mrs.
Dick Nelson, Mr. & Mrs. Dick Melton, Mr. & Mrs. Bob Mackner, Mr. &
Mrs. John Johnson, Parker Johnston, Bob Rogers, Charlie Yearka, Chuck Dean Mr.
& Mrs. Paul McCabe and Nick Buckles. Also we know Rudy and Betty would have
been there too but for Betty’s illness – they were missed and inquired about
by everyone. They had not missed
one in 4 years. Bill Sample was also unable to attend because of his wife’s
illness.
