PCPA EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
April 27, 2003
The meeting was
called to order at 9:30 am, Sunday, April 27, 2003 at the Henry Schmidt Meeting
Room in the Local 10 Longshore Hall.
One minute of
silence was observed in memory of our deceased Brother Larry Clark, Columbia
River Delegate, who passed away two months ago and all of the other Brothers and
Sisters deceased since the last meeting.
In attendance
were: Joe Lucas, President; Lou Loveridge, 1st Vice President; John Johnson, 2nd
Vice President; Arne Auvinen, Secretary-Treasurer; Delegates: Al Perisho,
LA/Long Beach; Cleophas Williams, San Francisco; Ken Swicker, Longview;Alternate,
Lois Stranahan, Columbia River; Joe
Jakovac, Southern Oregon; Phil Leili, Tacoma; and Paul McCabe.
Seattle Coast
Committeeman Joe Wenzel spoke to us regarding the contract.
He said that the six year contract was the best that we could get with
the medical and pension increases (particularly for the widows).
There was not much discussion on this subject.
Most members seemed to be content with the medical and pensions intact.
Arne gave his financial
report. The PCPA is in good shape
since there are no unusual expenses expected this year (such as having Bill Ward
represent us during contract negotiations and also the printing costs of PCPA
Pension Club Charters and Membership Cards which were in last years budget).
Arne reminded us that he is not going to run for re-election in
September. He suggested Al Perisho as a possibility, but Al declined.
It is very important that we find a competent candidate for the office of
Secretary-Treasurer. This officer is
the work-horse of any organization and Arne has always done an outstanding job
and really cannot be replaced.
We still have
the problem of attracting more members especially from the younger most recent
retirees George Romero, Welfare Director, spoke to us explaining the condition
of the Pension Fund. He stated that
the increases would come through as soon as Washington DC okay's them.
The pension increases begin in July and the widows increase will be
retroactive from January. They
expect them to go out approximately in August.
Verna Potter,
Longview, is Founding Organizing Chairman of the Oregon Chapter of the Alliance
of Retired Americans (ARA). She is
doing an excellent job and gave a good report of their activities.
Among other
things discussed was the loss of work in various ports, etc. We talked about the
Port of Seattle's real estate plans. They
are closing and selling warehouses, turning cargo docks over to passenger ships
and going along with Paul Allen's dream of waterfront condos.
The Local 10
Ladies Auxiliary provided us with a delicious lunch. In addition to the Board
members, the meeting was attended by Joe Mosely, Bill Ward and Enola McCoy,
Local 10, Georgette Johnson and Rudy Martinez, Local 19. Bill Duncan, Jim Keith
and Frank Kennedy, Canadian Area. Bob Caso, Port Angeles, Joe Wenzel Coast
Committeeman, George Romero, Welfare Director and Verna Potter, Longview. The
Columbia River Delegates reminded us to be sure to attend the PCPA 36th Annual
Convention at the Columbia River Double Tree Hotel, 1401 N. Hayden Island Drive,
Portland, Oregon. They have a great
time planned for us Sept, 14 through 17, 2003.
Respectfully submitted,
Paul S. McCabe, Delegate
Local 19, Pensioners Club
John Johnson, 2nd Vice President
Pacific Coast Pensioners Assn.
