NORTHWEST IMPORT DECLINE
An item of interest to our waterfront workers appeared
in the Seattle Times recently. It says imports to the pacific coast are
moving more and more to Southern California. California handles about 67%
of container trade in 2000, up from 64% in 1999. Seattle dropped to 10.2%
from 11.5% Tacoma dropped from 9.1% to 8.8% This is due to container ships
getting bigger, something we can do little about. The trend is likely to
continue, of course the Port of Seattle will always have international
trade but, the article says, it may not be a growth industry. Something to
think about if recession or worse rears its ugly head. |
