BIPARTISANSHIP?

There is a lot of politician talk about how “bipartisanship”is going to “heal the nation,” “reconcile our differences” and make everybody happy. This is, we say, something you put on the ground, spread it all around, it will make your flowers grow; as was said about how the boss has our interests at heart during union organizing days at an earlier time.

There was a song written at that time about “bipartisanship.” It is worth repeating:

A story ‘bout mules and elephants.
The mule was a queen who ruled quite well,
Till the tragic clang of a wedding bell.

The bride was sweet as donkeys go,
People got scared, began to squirm,

When she hooked up with the pachyderm.

Union rights the people cried loudly,
But jumbo did himself quite proudly,
He moved into the White house fast,

“Listen to the story of a strange romance;

When the elephant married the ass.

People wondered why the donkey
Aped her husband like a monkey.
Love, love love, what a wonderful thing
Love, love, love made the elephant sing

While he plucked the goose with the golden egg.

How did these things come to pass?
Well the elephant married the ass.

Here’s the moral to this story,
Both our parties are turnin’ Tory
Cause the ass wont sue for a divorce,
We’re gonna saddle us another horse.

We’ll build our own party,
A real party, a people’s party now!
