COLUMBUS CANADA BEING WORKED AT PORT
OF LOS ANGELES
(Jersey City, NJ, May 26, 1998)
This is to advise that the containership COLUMBUS CANADA
docked at the Matson Terminal, Terminal Island, California, Port of Los
Angeles, on Monday, May 25, at approximately 5:30 pm.
Shortly after the vessel berthed, approximately 30 protesters
established a picket line outside the gate of Matson Terminal. Following
discussions between Matson and Columbus Line an undertaking was given
that no Australian cargo would be discharged. After further discussions
with the union, assurances were given that the discharge
operations of the vessel would be monitored. Based upon these assurances
the picket line dispersed. The vessel is expected to sail May 27.
